Painting: Dunnottar Silhouette

'Your Castle Is My Castle'

You proposed to me at the top of this tower. Your blissful smile says it all: you still think our castle sits on clouds, with roses climbing ivory walls. You can't see lichen on crumbling stones – that we're really standing in ruins.

Just one push would make you understand that the rocks below are real...

"Too close to the edge," you murmur. Then you gently pull me back, and I remember why I said, "Yes."

Rebecca's Feedback:

I really love this! It’s as if the narrator is looking at an old photo, taken at the time of his (or her) proposal; and somehow the little story encompasses all the ups and downs of a long marriage.

In exactly 75 words you’ve captured a lot of emotion without once mentioning ‘love’ or the whole gamut of feelings that come and go in a long relationship.

Well done Rebecca!
